I first found Azure Ray on a mix cd a friend made me in 2003. Very few of their songs and the songs of their subsequent solo projects are particularly uplifting, but the voices of Orenda Fink and Maria Taylor are both haunting. Like Morrissey, Nico, and the Eels, perhaps the part of their songs that are uplifting is the remove that you can experience their lyrics as:
It is not your life, therefore, sing a different song.
